ST. PETERSBURG, June 21 (Itar-Tass) - The European Union wants closer cooperation with Russia in order to remove economic barriers, and the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum is an important platform for these ends, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Friday, addressing the forum’s plenary meeting.
“The Forum is a major platform for business and politics, it makes its contribution in globalization,” she noted. According to Merkel, a free trade zone between the European Union and the United States, a widely discussed subject both in Europe and in America, “is very important.” “We want to cooperate with Russia as well in order to remove economic barriers,” she stressed.
According to the German Chancellor, Russia “has already confirmed its committement to the principles of free trade.”
