LATAKIA, January 20. /TASS/. Russian Aerospace Defense Forces in Syria has delivered four airstrikes at terrorists retreating under the offensive launched by the government forces and patriotic opposition in the mountains of Latakia, Russian Defense Ministry’s official spokesman Gen. Col. Igor Konashenkov told reporters on Wednesday.
"Russian jets delivered four airstrikes at disparate groups of militants retreating under the offensive of Syrian government forces and patriotic opposition near the mountains of Jebel al-Akrad (Latakia province)," Konashenkov said.
A Su-34 jet delivered an airstrike at a workshop near the Hatla village where militants were planting explosives in cars, he added. Representatives of the Syrian opposition provided coordinates of this target. As a result of an airstrike, the workshop was destroyed, Konashenkov noted.
Russia’s Aerospace Forces have bombed a field camp of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group over the past 24 hours in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor province, destroying a command post of the militants. The Russian aircraft also delivered an airstrike on the IS field artillery and a fuel and lubricants depot, Konashenkov went on to say.
"An airstrike on a field camp of the Islamic State terrorist group was delivered in the area of the Mreya village, Deir ez-Zor province. The direct hit destroyed the terrorists’ command post and barracks with all the contents," he said.
In addition, a Su-34 bomber launched an airstrike on the positions of the militants’ field artillery in the same province in the area of the Meshiya settlement. "The objective monitoring data confirm the destruction of three artillery pieces," Konashenkov added.
According to him, Russia’s aircraft also launched a bombing attack in the area of Bgeliya (Deir ez-Zor) on battlefield positons of missile artillery and a fuel depot. "The objective monitoring means recorded the destruction of two multiple launch rocket systems, as well as detonation of the fuel stored in the depot," the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said.
Russia launched a military operation against the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra Front terrorist groups, both of which are banned in Russia, in the territory of Syria on September 30, 2015 at the request of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Initially, the air group consisted of about 50 warplanes and helicopters, including Su-34 and Su24M planes; Su-25 assault aircraft; Su-30SM fighter jets; Mi-8 and Mi-24 helicopters. Later, 12 bombers and fighter jets joined the group, which now has 69 warplanes.
