MOSCOW, January 29. /TASS/. Another regiment set of the S-400 Triumf air defense system will assume combat duty in the Moscow Region until the end of the year, Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Friday.
"As part of the Aerospace Force rearmament with modern and promising air defense missile systems, another regiment set of the S-400 Triumf antiaircraft missile system will become operational until the end of the year at one of air defense units of the Aerospace Force in the Moscow Region, the Defense Ministry said in a statement obtained by TASS.
Also, new S-400 air defense missile systems are expected to join air defense units of military districts. In a perspective, Triumf should form the basis of antiaircraft missile regiments of the Aerospace Force, the ministry said.
It was reported earlier that five regiments were expected to be rearmed with S-400 systems in 2016.
In late 2015, Almaz-Antey defense firm, which manufactures these systems, announced transferring three regiment sets of these complexes to the Armed Forces. The company’s press office said that the Russian Defense Ministry had already received 11 regiment sets of the Triumf air defense missile system.
The S-400 Triumf is the newest long-range antiaircraft missile system that went into service in 2007.
It is designed to destroy aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, including medium-range missiles, and can also be used against ground objectives.
The S-400 can engage targets at a distance of 400 km and at an altitude of up to 30 km.
