MOSCOW, February 16. /TASS/. Russia and Iran are facing common challenges and threats in the region that require joint efforts, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Tuesday at a meeting with his visiting Iranian counterpart, Hosein Dehqan.
"I am sure our meeting will help promote closer friendly ties between the Russian and Iranian armed forces," he said, adding that basic guidelines for further bilateral contacts had been outlined at a meeting of the two countries’ defense ministers in Teheran and Moscow.
The Russian defense minister said the intergovernmental agreement on military cooperation that was signed in Teheran in January 2015 created a legal framework for closer relations between the Russian and Iranian defense ministries for a long-term perspective.
"We believe that the efficiency of Russia’s and Iran’s efforts against international terrorism will depend on the practical realization of bilateral cooperation projects. We want Russian-Iranian cooperation in this sphere be long-term and comprehensive," Shoigu said.
Russia and Iran are ready to coordinate their cooperation on a wide range of global and regional problems, Sergey Shoigu went on to say.
"The years-long relations between our countries are distinguished by the high level of confidence and readiness to coordinate approaches on a wide variety of global and regional issues," the Russian minister said.
He said that the November 2015 talks in Teheran between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Hassan Rouhani gave a fresh impetus to cooperation between the two countries.
"Naturally, we are paying much attention to the top-level agreements," Shoigu noted. "We commend the lifting of the United States’ and the European Union’s restrictive measures off our country. This fact is of major importance in conditions of the growing crises in the Middle East."
