MOSCOW, March 18. /TASS/. Russia is carrying out no work on the South Stream gas pipeline project and has received no proposals from Europe on its resumption, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.
"The South Stream project as such doesn’t exist. It is closed and no work is being carried out," Peskov said.
The project "was halted due to the position of the European Commission," the Kremlin spokesman said.
The presidential spokesman said "no" in reply to the journalists’ question about whether Russia had received any proposals from Europe on the project’s resumption.
"They were also no decisions of the European Commission on changing its position on this project," the Kremlin spokesman said.
According to Peskov, it is also necessary "to get acquainted in detail" with today’s statement by EU Ambassador to Russia Vigaudas Usackas who has said the EU will examine the issue of the South Stream project resumption, if Russia submits the relevant request.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in December 2014 that the South Stream gas pipeline project had been closed as the EU insisted on the need of its compliance with the Third Energy Package. It was decided at the time that Russia would build the Turkish Stream gas pipeline project instead.
