Faulty heater in ISS Russian segment to be replaced — Roscosmos

MOSCOW, June 11. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia's Roscosmos space agency reported that smoke detected at the International Space Station on Tuesday appeared in the water reclamation system in the food and water heater, and that the heater would be disassembled.

"On June 10, ISS engineer Alexander Skvortsov detected, at 10.37 pm, Moscow time,  smoke in the heater's water regeneration system. The crew decided to deactivate the unit," the agency's press service said. "After the crew sent a report to the Earth, specialists at the Mission Control Center in Korolyov, Moscow region, decided to have the unit disassembled."

The crew did not use protective gear during the incident. As of the moment, the air conditions on the ISS have normalized, and there is no threat to the health of the crew, the press service said.

ISS currency accommodates an international crew of Expedition 40 comprising commander Steven Swanson (NASA), engineers Alexander Skvortsov, Oleg Artemyev, Maksim Surayev (RSA), Gregory Wiseman (NASA) and Alexander Gerst (ESA).

A NASA report on Wednesday said the ISS crew noticed a small amount of smoke coming from the ventilation system of the Russian segment at 10.40 pm Moscow time on Tuesday. The crew, acting by the book, deactivated the ventilation system and ventilated the ISS segment.

Swanson said the smoke quickly dispersed and that the crew was not in danger.
