MOSCOW, February 10. /TASS/. Russia’s government delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin sets off on Wednesday for a two-day visit to Iraq, a spokesperson from his office has told TASS.
In Baghdad, Rogozin will take part in the meeting of the Russian-Iraqi intergovernmental commission and hold talks with Iraq’s political leadership - President Fuad Masum, Parliament Speaker Salim al-Jabouri and Foreign Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari, who co-chairs the commission.
During the visit, the sides are expected to discuss improving the legal basis for cooperation between Russia and Iraq and broadening economic ties. An agreement will be considered on mutual protection of capital investments, a source in the Russian delegation said.
The meeting of the intergovernmental commission for trade, economic and scientific-technical cooperation, the first one since 2008, is scheduled for February 11.
This is the first trip of such a major Russian delegation to Iraq over the past years. The delegation consists of 90 people, including high-ranking officials and business representatives.
A source in the delegation told TASS among them are five deputy ministers from Russia’s Foreign Ministry, Transport Ministry and Energy Ministry and heads of large companies, including Gazprom Neft CEO Alexander Dyukov.
"The visit’s agenda is very extensive, the issues of cooperation in the areas of energy, agriculture, industry and others will be discussed," the source told TASS.
During the visit, talks on military and technical cooperation of Russia and Iraq will also be held. Russia’s delegation includes high-ranking officials from the Federal Service for Military-Technical Cooperation.
"Representatives of private Russian security companies also fly to Baghdad. The issues will be discussed on ensuring security by these structures of facilities and personnel of Russian companies working in Iraq," a source familiar with the talks’ agenda said.
