MOSCOW, August 07, /ITAR-TASS/. Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom has been invited to build two nuclear power plant units in China, Rosatom Deputy Director-General Gennady Sakharov said on Thursday.
“A Rosatom delegation will go to Harbin shortly to hold talks and assess the construction site for two NPP units in mainland China,” he said. “We have received an offer this is a new project and there will be two units.”
In early June, Rosatom Head Sergei Kiriyenko said Russia had offered to build a nuclear power plant in mainland China. “We know that the government of China has plans to build nuclear power plants in inner regions that are badly in need of electricity. Russia has unique experience and is one of the few countries that have the extensive experience of building and operating nuclear power plants in inner regions of the country. And we are ready to share our experience with our Chinese partners,” he said.
In late June, Rusatom Overseas (a branch of Rosatom) and China’s CNNC New Energy signed a memorandum for building floating nuclear power plants.
The document was signed by Qian Tianlin, Director General of CNNC New Energy Company, and D. Aliyev, CEO of Rusatom Overseas.
“The potential use of floating nuclear power plants is significant. The design provides for two options - self-propelled or barge-mounted floating NPPs. They might be connected to coastal infrastructure or float next to the consumer. Floating NPPs can provide a reliable power supply not only to remote settlements, for example, in the Far North and Far Eastern regions, but also to large industrial facilities such as oil platforms,” Aliyev said.
The next step in the implementation of the project will be the establishment of a joint Chinese-Russian working group.
On July 24-29, a Chinese delegation came to St. Petersburg and Moscow. The delegation visited the Floating NPP Training Centre and the Baltic Shipyard and had a meeting with the members of the referential floating NPP construction project team, as well as examined the floating power generating unit which is currently under construction.
