MOSCOW, January 12. /TASS/. Russia’s Ministry for Emergency Situations has consigned more than 32 tons of humanitarian aid to Tajikistan, some areas of which have been struck by an earthquake, the ministry’s press service told TASS on Tuesday.
"At the Russian government’s instruction, an Ilyushin-76 airlifter took off from the Ramenskoye airbase near Moscow today with a cargo of relief supplies for the people of Tajikistan who have lived through a devastating earthquake," a spokesman for the ministry said.
The relief consignment includes mobile electricity generating units, multi-bed tents, and blankets.
A powerful earthquake struck Tajikistan’s eastern Kuhistoni Badakhshon autonomous region on December 7. Its magnitude varied from 6.7 points to 7.2 points on the open-ended Richter scale.
Over the next twenty-four or so hours, the region survived another ten shocks with the magnitudes of 4.6 points to 5.5 points. More than 500 residential houses were destroyed fully or partly.
