MOSCOW, March 3. /TASS/. The oil-containing fluid spill area on Ekhabi oilfield in the North Sakhalin is over 3,500 square meters, Russian environmental regulator Rosprirodnadzor said on Thursday.
The oilfield is developed by RN-Sakhalinmorneftegaz, a subsidiary of the Russian oil major Rosneft.
"According to preliminary data, spill volume is about 15 tons and the area is over 3,500 square meters. Local residents found the spill. Ignition of oil products took place after the discovery. Oil ingress into water was not registered but such hazard may occur if water level rises because of melting snow. The spill is just 150 meters away from water," the regulator reported. The spill occurred overnight into March 3.
Rosneft’s press service said earlier RN-Sakhalinmorneftegaz performed partial burning on the oil spillage site to mitigate environmental risks.
