GENEVA, February 24. /TASS/. President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Alexander Zhukov has been appointed to chair the Coordination Commission of the 2022 Winter Games in China’s Beijing, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said in a statement posted on its official website on Wednesday.

"The Coordination Commission under Chair Alexander Zhukov will support the Organising Committee to further develop the Games plan with a special focus on sustainability and environmental protection, in line with Olympic Agenda 2020," IOC President Thomas Bach was quoted as saying in the statement.

The IOC also announced on Wednesday that Frank Fredericks, Olympic medalist and former Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, was named the chair of the Evaluation Commission 2024, and Ugur Erdener, an IOC Executive Board Member, would head the YOG Tripartite Working Group.

Speaking about Fredericks’ appointment and his important role in the future election of the host city for the 2024 Summer Olympics, Bach said: "Olympic Agenda 2020, with regard to the organization of the Olympic Games, puts a special focus on sustainability and the athletes’ experience. This is where Frank Fredericks, as a four-time Olympic silver medalist in sprint and former Chair of the IOC Athletes’ Commission, has great expertise."

According to the IOC, the candidate cities bidding for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games are Los Angeles (the United States), Rome (Italy), Budapest (Hungary) and Paris (France).

During the 128th IOC session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015, Beijing was elected the host city for the 2022 Winter Olympics making the Chinese capital the first city ever to host both the Summer Games (in 2008) and the Winter Games (in 2022).

Beijing won the right to host the 2022 Olympics in a tight race over Kazakhstan’s Almaty eventually securing 44 votes against 40 in support of the largest Kazakh city.
