MOSCOW, January 27. /ITAR-TASS/. The security system in the Black Sea resort of Sochi that will host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games next month conforms to world standards, Russian Emergencies Minister Vladimir Puchkov has said.
“I can say with certainty that the vital activity security level in Sochi is fully in line with the global standards,” Puchkov said in an interview with the Rossiiskaya Gazeta government daily to be published Tuesday.
“The Olympics are a large-scale global-level event that defines our country’s prestige,” the minister said. “Ensuring the safety of the Olympic Games is the most important task for us. Russian Emergencies Ministry specialists are getting ready for the Olympic Games just as athletes are.”
“We have deployed a large grouping of forces and means - more than 23,000 people and 500 units of equipment to ensure security,” Puchkov said.
He said a firefighting and rescue unit, a modern horse and dog specialist center and other facilities have been commissioned ahead of the Sochi Winter Olympics, which will run February 7-23.
“Training exercises, drills and checks are held constantly,” Puchkov said. “Fire safety and emergency response training has been organized for volunteers.”
The emergencies minister said his ministry has the experience of ensuring the safety of sports facilities during large-scale international competitions. During the 2013 Summer Universiade in the city of Kazan in the Russian republic of Tatarstan, 20,000 people and 285 units of equipment were used. Rescuers and firefighters were on duty at sports facilities round the clock.
"The task for the Russian Emergencies Ministry to ensure the safety of the youth competitions was fulfilled in full," Puchkov said.
