MOSCOW, January 31. /ITAR-TASS/. The Russian female national ice hockey team has completed the first stage of pre-Olympic trainings and set off for Russia’s resort city of Sochi, where the 2014 Winter Games kick off next Friday, the country’s ice hockey governing body said on its website on Friday.
The website said the women’s team recently practiced at the Novogorsk training centre outside Moscow and also played three matches against male youth hockey clubs, wining all of them.
“We are now entering the level of more qualified work on the game-tactics organization,” the website quoted Head Coach Mikhail Chekanov as saying.
The team will continue its pre-Olympic training starting Saturday in Sochi and next Wednesday the Russian women are scheduled for a joint training session with the Japanese national team.
The Russian female Olympic ice hockey squad was placed in Group B with teams from Germany, Japan and Sweden, while the rival Group A consists of Canada, Finland, Switzerland and the United States.
The opening game for the Russian team, which finished in the 6th place at the 2010 Olympics in Canada’s Vancouver, is scheduled for February 9 against Germany. The German women’s ice hockey team skipped the previous Winter Olympics in Canada.
